The leaderboard

Methodology

How the Index score is built

  • Screen 25%Size, pixel density, warm light and colour, from published specs and named reviews.
  • Store and UK libraries 20%Size of the built-in store, subscription options, and whether UK library ebooks (Libby/OverDrive, BorrowBox) can be read on the device.
  • Battery 15%Rated battery life at 30 minutes a day, checked against reviewers' measured drain where published.
  • Comfort and build 15%Weight, waterproofing, physical page buttons and in-hand grip.
  • Value 25%Street price in October 2026 against what the device does.

We did not run our own lab tests. Each score comes from published specifications, prices checked at Amazon UK and Kobo UK in October 2026, the library help pages of UK councils and OverDrive, and named reviews from TechRadar, The Verge, Trusted Reviews, How-To Geek and Android Police. We also used owner rating averages and counts from Amazon UK.

Each product gets a 0–100 score on five criteria. The Index is the weighted sum: (screen × 25 + library × 20 + battery × 15 + comfort × 15 + value × 25) ÷ 100, rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, the Kobo Clara BW scores (82×25 + 92×20 + 86×15 + 86×15 + 84×25) ÷ 100 = 85.7, which rounds to 86.

Library access carries 20% because it is the biggest practical difference between Kindle and Kobo in the UK. UK libraries lend ePub ebooks through Libby and BorrowBox. Kobo readers can borrow through OverDrive directly. Kindles cannot read UK library ebooks, as Libby's send-to-Kindle feature works in the US only.

  • Prices change often. Kindle prices in particular move during Amazon sales, so the value scores reflect the prices on the dates shown.
  • Battery figures are the makers' ratings at 30 minutes of reading a day. Bluetooth audio and high brightness shorten them.
  • Kindle prices are for the version with lock-screen ads. Removing ads costs about £10–£20 more.

The most complete UK reader per pound: sharp, waterproof, light, and it borrows library books directly.

Strengths

  • Borrow from UK libraries on the device via OverDrive
  • Reads ePub natively, 15 file formats
  • Longest Kobo battery rating: up to 53 days
  • 174g and IPX8

Weaknesses

  • 6-inch screen is smaller than the 7-inch Paperwhite
  • No page-turn buttons
  • Kobo store is smaller than Amazon's

Screen 82. A 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 panel at 300 ppi, with adjustable warm light (ComfortLight PRO) and dark mode. Text is as sharp as on the Paperwhite. The screen is just smaller.

Library 92. This is where it scores its lead. Kobo readers have OverDrive built in, so a UK library card lets you borrow Libby titles directly on the device. BorrowBox ebooks can be moved across with Adobe Digital Editions, as UK council guides explain. Kindles can do neither.

Battery 86, comfort 86, value 84. Kobo rates the 1,500mAh battery at up to 53 days at 30 minutes a day with the light at 10%. At 174g with IPX8 waterproofing, it is light enough for one hand. At £149.99 it costs £35 less than the Paperwhite with ads.

Pick it if You borrow from a UK library or want an e-reader outside Amazon's store.

Page buttons, a 7-inch colour screen and 32GB, with the same UK library access as the Clara. It costs £90 more.

Strengths

  • Physical page-turn buttons, which no current Kindle has
  • 7-inch colour screen with dark mode
  • 32GB storage
  • Stylus support for notes (stylus sold separately)

Weaknesses

  • £239.99 is the highest price here
  • Colours are muted, as on all Kaleido 3 screens
  • Shortest Kobo battery rating at 40 days

Comfort 93. The wide, curved grip and two page buttons make it the easiest reader here to hold in one hand. Android Authority and Android Central both picked out the buttons as the main reason to choose it. Android Central called it the natural upgrade from the discontinued Kindle Oasis. It weighs 199.5g and is rated IPX8.

Screen 88. The 7-inch Kaleido 3 panel shows text at 300 ppi and colour at 150 ppi. TechRadar and How-To Geek both describe the colours as muted and pastel rather than bold. Colour helps with covers and highlights more than with reading itself.

Library 95, battery 76, value 70. It has the same built-in OverDrive as the Clara, plus 32GB of space. Kobo rates the battery at up to 40 days at 30% brightness. How-To Geek called it decent rather than great. At £239.99 it is the most expensive reader here.

Pick it if You read for hours at a time and want physical page buttons.

The best screen and battery here, and Amazon's store. It cannot read UK library ebooks.

Strengths

  • Longest rated battery: up to 12 weeks
  • 7-inch 300 ppi screen with warm light
  • Largest ebook store, plus Kindle Unlimited
  • 4.5 stars from 17,256 Amazon UK ratings

Weaknesses

  • No UK library borrowing on the device
  • No ePub support without converting through Send to Kindle
  • Ads on the lock screen at this price

Battery 95. Amazon rates it at up to 12 weeks at 30 minutes a day. Reviewers' measured drain supports that. TechRadar went from 72% to 45% in three weeks of 2–3 hours' daily reading at low brightness. Trusted Reviews measured about 2% per hour at 25% brightness.

Screen 90. The 7-inch 300 ppi panel is the sharpest large screen here, with adjustable warm light and page turns about 25% faster than the previous generation. Android Police reported yellow banding at the bottom of its review unit. Amazon owners mention this too, so check yours on arrival.

Library 70, value 75. Amazon's store and Kindle Unlimited at £9.49 a month are the biggest in the UK. But UK library ebooks cannot be read on a Kindle, because Libby's Kindle delivery is US-only. At £184.99 with ads, it now costs £35 more than the Kobo Clara BW.

Pick it if You buy from Amazon or use Kindle Unlimited and want the longest battery.

At its current £144.99 promotional price, colour costs less than a Paperwhite. At full price it would score lower.

Strengths

  • Colour covers, comics and highlights
  • £115 below its £259.99 RRP right now
  • 4.5 stars from 2,838 Amazon UK ratings

Weaknesses

  • Early units had yellow banding at the screen edge
  • Shorter battery than the Paperwhite
  • No UK library borrowing

Value 90. Amazon UK lists the 16GB Colorsoft at £144.99, down 44% from £259.99 for as long as promotional stock lasts. That is £40 less than the Paperwhite with ads. Its value score depends on this price. At the full RRP it would score about 55 and fall to the bottom of the table.

Screen 84. The colour layer gives 150 ppi for colour and 300 ppi for black text. How-To Geek found the colour more natural than rival Kaleido 3 screens. Android Police and Forbes both reported a yellow band at the bottom of their units. Amazon says it fixed this and will replace affected devices.

Battery 80, comfort 82, library 70. It is rated at up to 8 weeks, against 12 for the Paperwhite. At 219g it is the heaviest reader here, and it is IPX8. Library access has the same limit as the other Kindles.

Pick it if You read comics or cookbooks on Kindle and can buy at the promotional price.

A Clara BW with a colour screen, for £20 more and two weeks less battery.

Strengths

  • Colour in the same small 174g body as the Clara BW
  • OverDrive library borrowing built in
  • Now available in white

Weaknesses

  • Colour layer makes text slightly less crisp than on the Clara BW
  • 42-day rated battery against 53 for the Clara BW
  • Colour on a 6-inch screen is of limited use for comics

Screen 80. A 6-inch Kaleido 3 panel shows 300 ppi in black and white and 150 ppi in colour. Colour suits covers and highlights. Comics and magazines are cramped at 6 inches.

Library 92, comfort 86. It has the same OverDrive borrowing, ePub support, 174g weight and IPX8 rating as the Clara BW.

Battery 74, value 72. Kobo rates it at up to 42 days at 30% brightness. At £169.99 it costs £20 more than the Clara BW for colour. We think most readers are better off with the BW model.

Pick it if You want a small Kobo and colour covers matter to you.

The cheapest way into e-reading at £84.99, but it is not waterproof and has no warm light.

Strengths

  • £84.99, £100 less than the Paperwhite
  • Lightest reader here at 158g
  • 4.5 stars from 25,347 Amazon UK ratings

Weaknesses

  • Not waterproof
  • No warm light
  • Shortest battery rating at 6 weeks

Value 92. At £84.99 with ads, this is the cheapest reader here by £60. It is also the lightest at 158g. Its 6-inch 300 ppi screen is as sharp as the Clara BW's.

Screen 76, comfort 70. The front light is now as bright at its maximum as the Paperwhite's. But there is no warm-light setting for night reading, and there is no waterproof rating.

Battery 68, library 68. It is rated at up to 6 weeks, half the Paperwhite's figure. It has the same Kindle store and the same lack of UK library support as the other Kindles.

Pick it if You want a small, cheap Kindle and do not read in the bath.

Considered, not scored in full

Kindle Scribe (2025)

An 11-inch writing tablet at £449. We rate it with note-taking devices, not e-readers.

Kindle Scribe Colorsoft

£569, a writing tablet first, out of scope for a reading comparison.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition

Adds 32GB, wireless charging and auto-brightness to the Paperwhite for £229.99. The reading experience is the same.

PocketBook Verse Pro Colour

Reads library ePubs, but has thin UK retail availability and few UK owner reviews.

Boox Go 6

Android-based and not waterproof. It suits tinkerers more than most readers.

Buying explained

Kindle or Kobo: the UK library question

Most UK councils lend ebooks through Libby (OverDrive) or BorrowBox. Both supply ePub files protected by Adobe DRM. Kobo readers have OverDrive built in, so you sign in with your library card and borrow on the device.

BorrowBox has no Kobo app. You borrow on its website, download the ePub, open it in Adobe Digital Editions on a computer and drag it to the e-reader. Several UK council guides explain the steps. Kindles cannot read either service's ebooks. Libby's help pages say reading on a Kindle e-reader is available in the US only.

  • Libby/OverDrive on Kobo: borrow directly on the device
  • BorrowBox on Kobo: via Adobe Digital Editions on a computer
  • Kindle e-readers: neither service works in the UK

Colour screens: what you gain and lose

Colour e-readers add a filter layer over the E Ink panel. Black text stays at 300 ppi, but colour images drop to 150 ppi, and colours look pastel rather than vivid. Reviewers agree it helps with covers, highlights and some comics, not with novels.

The filter also costs battery. The Kindle Colorsoft is rated at 8 weeks against 12 for the Paperwhite. The Kobo Clara Colour is rated at 42 days against 53 for the Clara BW.

Battery ratings, read properly

Every rating here assumes 30 minutes of reading a day with Wi-Fi off and the light low. If you read two hours a day, divide by four. Trusted Reviews measured about 2% battery per hour on the Paperwhite at 25% brightness. That works out at around 50 hours of reading per charge.

Ads, subscriptions and the true price

Kindle prices here are for the versions with lock-screen ads. Removing ads costs about £10–£20 more. Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month, or £114 a year. Kobo Plus is Kobo's version. A UK library card is free and works on Kobo.

Over three years, a heavy Kindle Unlimited reader spends about £340 on subscriptions. That is more than any device in this table, so think about where your books will come from before you choose a reader.

Waterproofing and size

Every reader here except the basic Kindle is rated IPX8, which Kobo defines as up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. The 6-inch models weigh 158–174g. The 7-inch models weigh 199.5–219g. That difference is noticeable when you read lying down.

FAQ

Can I borrow UK library books on a Kindle?

No. Libby's send-to-Kindle feature works in the US only, and BorrowBox does not support Kindle e-readers. You can read library books on a Kobo instead, or in the Libby or BorrowBox app on a phone or tablet.

Which e-reader is best for library books in the UK?

A Kobo. The Clara BW, Clara Colour and Libra Colour all have OverDrive built in for Libby titles. They can also take BorrowBox ePubs through Adobe Digital Editions.

Is the Kindle Paperwhite worth it over the basic Kindle?

If you read in the bath or at night, yes. The Paperwhite adds IPX8 waterproofing, warm light, a 7-inch screen and double the rated battery. It currently costs £100 more.

Is a colour e-reader worth it?

Only if you read comics, cookbooks or illustrated books, or care about covers. For novels, a black-and-white screen is sharper and the battery lasts longer.

Can a Kobo read Kindle books?

Not books bought from Amazon, which use Amazon's own DRM. You would need to buy again from the Kobo store, which has a large UK catalogue.

How long do e-readers last?

Several years. The main wear item is the battery. Kobo highlights repairability on its newer Clara and Libra models.

Do I need the ad-free Kindle?

The ads appear only on the lock screen and home screen, not inside books. Paying to remove them costs about £10–£20, depending on the model.
