About

We think a rating should come with its working.

Most review scores are a number with no explanation. Ours are built from named criteria with published weights, so you can see why a product scored 87 and not 92.

What we do

Ratings Index publishes product ratings for shoppers in the United States and the United Kingdom. Each report covers one category, such as noise-cancelling headphones or hair dryers. It scores the products people are most likely to buy and ranks them by their Index score.

What makes a report

  • A short list of criteria that matter for the category, each with a weight in percent.
  • A score from 0 to 100 for every product on every criterion.
  • An Index score: the weighted total, rounded to a whole number.
  • Dated prices from named retailers, in dollars or pounds.
  • References for the specs, lab results and owner data behind each score.

Two markets, two sets of reports

US and UK shoppers see different models, prices and subscription terms. A doorbell plan can cost a different amount in each country, and a dryer sold in Britain may not exist in America. So we publish separate reports for each market rather than converting currencies.

Independence

No company pays for a score, a place in a report or a preview. Read how we’re funded and our editorial policy for the detail.
