The bottom line

The Eufy Video Doorbell E340 scores highest at 89. It records to 8GB of built-in storage with no fee, has a second camera aimed at packages, and costs $149.99 with nothing to pay after that. The Ring Battery Doorbell 4K Pro (83) has the sharpest video but needs a $49.99-a-year plan to save any clips.

Methodology

How the Index score is built

  • Video quality 25%Resolution, field of view, night vision and HDR, from specs and published reviewer tests.
  • Detection and alerts 20%Person, package and vehicle detection, alert accuracy and speed, with the cheapest plan that unlocks them.
  • Subscription cost 25%100 minus 0.55 × the yearly price of the cheapest plan that saves clips and turns on smart alerts.
  • Installation and power 15%Battery, wired or both, transformer needs, chime support and weather rating.
  • Three-year cost 15%100 minus 0.12 × every dollar of three-year cost (price plus three years of plan) above $100.

We did not test these doorbells in our own lab. We built each score from published specs, the makers' own plan pages, independent reviews and owner ratings. The main reviewer sources are PCMag, Tom's Guide, PCWorld, Trusted Reviews, The Verge and Expert Reviews. Each one is listed under References.

Each product gets a 0–100 score on five criteria. The Index is the weighted sum: score × weight ÷ 100, added up and rounded. Subscription cost and three-year cost are worked out with fixed formulas, so anyone can redo them. A doorbell with no required plan scores 100 on subscription cost. A $100-a-year plan scores 45.

For each doorbell we used the cheapest plan that does two things: saves motion clips you can watch later, and turns on person or package alerts. Plan prices are the annual prices on each maker's site in October 2026. Doorbell prices were checked at the maker's store or Best Buy on October 8–10, 2026. Owner ratings are Amazon averages read in the same week.

  • Index = round(Σ score × weight ÷ 100)
  • Weights: video 25, detection 20, subscription 25, installation 15, three-year cost 15
  • Subscription score = 100 − 0.55 × yearly plan price
  • Three-year cost score = 100 − 0.12 × (price + 3 years of plan − $100)
  • Ring Solo, Google Home Premium Standard, Arlo Smart Aware Single and Wyze Cam Plus priced at annual billing
  • Aqara's optional iCloud+ storage for HomeKit Secure Video ($0.99 a month) is not counted, as it is not needed to save clips

Two cameras, local storage and no fee. $150 is the whole three-year bill.

Strengths

  • No subscription needed for recording, person, package or face alerts
  • Second camera points down at the doormat to catch parcels
  • Runs on battery or doorbell wiring
  • Lowest three-year cost of the 2K-and-up doorbells

Weaknesses

  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
  • No indoor chime in the box when run on battery
  • No Apple Home support

Score: 89. The E340 wins because its three-year cost is its price: $149.99. All video saves to 8GB of storage inside the doorbell, which Eufy says holds about 60 days of event clips. Person, package and face alerts work without a plan. That gives it a perfect 100 on subscription cost and 94 on three-year cost.

Video scores 82. The main camera records 2K, and a second camera points down at the step so parcels left on the mat stay in view. Trusted Reviews called the video high quality and the recording subscription-free. ZDNET names it its best video doorbell overall. Detection scores 82: package alerts are a real strength, but Soldermag rates its face recognition below Nest's.

Installation scores 86. It runs on a removable battery or on existing doorbell wiring, where the wires trickle-charge the battery and ring your old chime. On battery alone there is no chime circuit, so you hear the bell through the doorbell's speaker, an Echo or a Eufy chime. Owners give it 4.0 stars from about 4,500 Amazon ratings.

Pick it if You want to see who is at the door and who took the parcel, and never pay a monthly fee.

The sharpest picture on a battery doorbell, plus $50 a year to keep clips.

Strengths

  • 4K video with up to 10x zoom
  • Radar 3D motion detection cuts false alerts
  • Quick-release battery charges fast and swaps in seconds
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi 6

Weaknesses

  • No saved video at all without a plan
  • Needs about 15 Mbps upload for full 4K
  • Older Ring battery packs do not fit

Score: 83. This is the best camera here. It records 4K with up to 10x zoom, and Tom's Guide called the video beautiful, even in low light. That earns 95 on video. Radar-based 3D motion detection sends fewer junk alerts than plain motion sensors, so detection scores 88.

The plan is what holds it back. Without one, you get live view and doorbell calls, but nothing is saved. Ring Solo, the cheapest plan for one device, is $49.99 a year and adds up to 180 days of video history plus person, package and vehicle alerts. Over three years the doorbell and plan come to $399.96, so subscription cost scores 73 and three-year cost 64.

Installation scores 92. It runs on a quick-release battery or on doorbell wiring, and it is one of the few battery doorbells with 4K. Check your internet first: Ring recommends 15 Mbps of upload speed for 4K. If you already pay for Ring Multi at $99.99 a year for other Ring cameras, the doorbell adds nothing to your bill and its Index would rise.

Pick it if You want the clearest video and already use Alexa or other Ring devices.

Two cameras for $120, local microSD recording and a $30-a-year plan.

Strengths

  • Two cameras, one for faces and one for packages
  • 24/7 local recording to microSD when wired, no plan needed
  • Cheapest paid plan in this report
  • IP65 weather rating

Weaknesses

  • Person and package alerts need Cam Plus
  • Cam Plus annual price rose from $19.99 to $29.99 in March 2026
  • Reviewers note slower alerts than Ring and Nest

Score: 80. The Duo Cam copies the Eufy idea of a second, downward camera for half the hardware price. The front camera is 2K and the bottom one is 1080p. PCWorld called it a great deal and TechGearLab rated it a top doorbell-style camera for the money. Video scores 76.

The plan is cheap. Cam Plus is $29.99 a year for one camera and adds 14 days of cloud clips with person, vehicle, pet and package alerts. That price went up from $19.99 in March 2026. Without a plan you can still record locally: with a microSD card and wired power it records around the clock. Subscription cost scores 84 and three-year cost 87.

Detection scores 72. The smart alerts sit behind the plan, and PCWorld noted the doorbell suits homes where ultra-fast alerts matter less. Installation scores 82: battery or wired, and it works with your existing chime. Wyze sells it mainly through its own store, so we did not find a large Amazon rating to quote.

Pick it if You want two cameras on a tight budget and are fine paying $30 a year for smart alerts.

The cheapest to own here, with free cloud clips and Apple HomeKit Secure Video.

Strengths

  • Seven days of free cloud clips, no plan
  • Works with Apple HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa and Google
  • Local face recognition at no cost
  • Chime repeater included

Weaknesses

  • Only 1080p, with a wide 16:9 frame that can miss the doormat
  • Runs on AA batteries rather than a rechargeable pack
  • Lowest owner rating here, with Wi-Fi drop-outs a common complaint

Score: 79. The G4 costs $99.99 and asks nothing more. Aqara stores event clips in its cloud for seven days at no charge, and when the doorbell is wired it can record 24/7 to a microSD card in the included chime. That earns 100 on both subscription cost and three-year cost.

The trade-off is the camera. It records 1080p with a wide, short frame. The Verge found it missed most of the porch and never caught a package, and TechRadar called moving video pixelated. Video scores 62 and detection 64.

Its big draw is Apple Home. It is one of the few battery doorbells that works with HomeKit Secure Video, which stores clips end-to-end encrypted in iCloud if you pay for iCloud+ from $0.99 a month. Installation scores 74: it runs on six AA batteries or doorbell wiring. Owners give it 3.6 stars from more than 3,300 Amazon ratings, with Wi-Fi drop-outs a frequent complaint.

The best detection and AI search, but $100 a year to unlock most of it.

Strengths

  • Best detection here: person, package, animal and vehicle alerts built in
  • Square 2K HDR picture shows visitors head to toe
  • Gemini search and event descriptions with the Advanced plan
  • Free tier keeps 6 hours of short previews

Weaknesses

  • Wired only; no battery option
  • Highest three-year cost in this report
  • Familiar faces and 30-day history need a plan

Score: 70. The Nest has the smartest software here. Person, package, animal and vehicle alerts work without a plan, and PCWorld called its Gemini features a game-changer. Detection scores 95. The 2K HDR camera has a square frame and a 166° view, and video scores 88.

The cost is the problem. The free tier saves only 6 hours of 10-second previews. Google Home Premium Standard is $100 a year for 30 days of history and familiar faces. Gemini search and descriptions need Advanced at $200 a year. Over three years, the doorbell and the Standard plan cost $499.99, the most here. Subscription cost scores 45 and three-year cost 52.

Installation scores 66 because it is wired only. You need a 16–24 VAC doorbell transformer, or you must add one. Note that Google's plan covers every Nest camera in the home, so if you already pay for one, the doorbell's real cost per year is zero and its Index would rise sharply.

Pick it if You use Google Home, already pay for a plan, and have doorbell wiring.

Cheapest to buy at $80, but the $96-a-year plan makes it dear to own.

Strengths

  • Lowest sticker price here at $79.99
  • Square 2K view shows visitors head to toe
  • Works with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and IFTTT
  • Battery or wired

Weaknesses

  • Nothing is saved without a paid plan
  • Cheapest Arlo plan has risen from $2.99 to $9.99 a month over a few years
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only

Score: 69. The Arlo is the cheapest doorbell to buy here and one of the most expensive to own. At $79.99 on sale at Best Buy, down from $129.99, the hardware is a bargain. PCMag gave the second-gen model an Editors' Choice and praised its sharp, head-to-toe video. Video scores 80.

Then the plan arrives. Without one you get live view and doorbell calls, but no saved clips and no smart alerts. Arlo's plans were renamed in September 2026, and the cheapest single-camera plan, Smart Aware, is now $9.99 a month or $95.88 a year. Three years of doorbell and plan come to $367.63. Subscription cost scores 47 and detection 72, since all smart alerts sit behind that plan.

Installation scores 86. It works on battery or doorbell wiring and supports the widest range of smart home platforms here. Owners give it 4.0 stars from about 1,800 Amazon ratings. It makes sense if you already pay for Arlo's unlimited plan for other cameras.

Google Nest Doorbell (battery)

Still sold, but its 960p camera is a 2021 design and it cannot record 24/7 on any plan.

Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Pro

Same 4K camera and same Ring plan costs as the battery model we rated, at the same $249.99, but wired only.

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K Plus

Cheaper at $179.99, but it needs the same $49.99-a-year plan and has a lower-resolution camera than the 4K Pro.

Eufy Video Doorbell S330 (Dual)

Older dual-camera model that needs a HomeBase; the E340 does the same job without one for less.

Aqara Smart Doorbell Camera G410

Newer 2K model with a Matter hub at $199.99, twice the G4's price; too few owner reviews yet to score.

Buying explained

Why the subscription matters as much as the doorbell

Most video doorbells only show live video for free. Saving clips, and getting alerts that say person or package rather than just motion, usually needs a plan. Over three years, that plan can cost more than the doorbell.

Here is how the yearly plans compare in October 2026. Each is the cheapest plan that saves clips and turns on smart alerts for one doorbell.

  • Eufy E340: $0, records to 8GB on the doorbell
  • Aqara G4: $0, seven days of free cloud clips
  • Wyze Cam Plus: $29.99 a year, one camera
  • Ring Solo: $49.99 a year, one device
  • Arlo Smart Aware Single: $95.88 a year
  • Google Home Premium Standard: $100 a year, all Nest cameras in the home

How three-year cost changes the ranking

The Arlo is the cheapest doorbell to buy at $79.99. After three years of its plan, it has cost $367.63. The Eufy costs $149.99 on day one and still $149.99 three years later.

That is why we weight subscription cost at 25% and three-year cost at 15%. Together they make up 40% of the Index, the same as video quality and detection combined.

When a plan is worth paying for

A plan makes sense if you already have one. Ring Multi and Google Home Premium cover every camera at one address. If you already pay for either, adding a doorbell costs you nothing more each year.

A plan also buys features you cannot get locally, such as Google's Gemini search or Ring's 180 days of history. Decide whether you will use them before you commit.

Battery or wired

Battery doorbells install anywhere in about 15 minutes, which suits renters. They sleep between events, so they may miss the first second of motion, and you have to recharge them every few months.

Wired doorbells need a doorbell transformer, usually 16–24 VAC. They stay awake, can record around the clock on some models, and ring your existing chime. Most battery models here can also be wired, which keeps the battery topped up.

Check your Wi-Fi at the door

A doorbell is often the device farthest from your router, and an outside wall weakens the signal. Test your phone's Wi-Fi at the front door before you buy. Ring's 4K models want about 15 Mbps of upload speed for full resolution, while the Eufy, Arlo and Aqara only use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

FAQ

Which video doorbell has no monthly fee?

The Eufy E340 and the Aqara G4 both save video with no plan. The Eufy records to 8GB of storage inside the doorbell. The Aqara keeps seven days of free cloud clips. The Wyze Duo Cam can also record to a microSD card without a plan when wired.

How much does a Ring subscription cost in 2026?

Ring renamed its plans in January 2026. Ring Solo covers one device for $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. Ring Multi covers every device at one address for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Ring Pro is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year.

Does a Ring doorbell work without a subscription?

Partly. You get live view, two-way talk and motion alerts. You cannot save or watch any recorded video, and person and package alerts need a plan.

How much is Google Home Premium for a Nest Doorbell?

The Standard plan is $10 a month or $100 a year, with 30 days of event history. The Advanced plan is $20 a month or $200 a year and adds 60 days of history, 10 days of 24/7 video on wired doorbells and Gemini features. One plan covers every Nest camera in the home.

Is a 4K video doorbell worth it?

Only if your upload speed can keep up. Ring recommends about 15 Mbps for its 4K doorbells. On slower connections the video drops in resolution, and a good 2K doorbell will look much the same.

Do I need doorbell wiring?

No. Every doorbell here except the Nest wired 3rd gen can run on batteries. Wiring keeps the battery charged and lets the doorbell ring your existing indoor chime.

Which doorbell is best for an iPhone household?

The Aqara G4. It works with Apple HomeKit Secure Video, which stores clips encrypted in your iCloud account. You need an Apple Home hub and an iCloud+ plan from $0.99 a month for that feature.

Why does the Arlo rank last if it is the cheapest?

Because nothing is saved without a plan, and the cheapest Arlo plan is $95.88 a year. Over three years that brings its total to $367.63, more than the Eufy, Wyze or Aqara.
