Methodology
How the Index score is built
- Sound 30%Clarity, bass and loudness for the size, scored from published independent reviews and owner feedback.
- Battery 20%Rated playback hours from the maker, adjusted down where owner reports show a large shortfall.
- Durability 20%IP rating, published drop rating, and whether the speaker floats.
- Features 15%App EQ, multi-speaker pairing, microphone, power bank, Wi-Fi and charging options.
- Value 15%Street price against what the speaker delivers on the other four criteria.
We did not run lab tests on these speakers. Each score comes from three inputs: the maker's published specs, independent reviews from named publications, and pooled owner ratings on Amazon.
Battery and durability scores lean on specs: rated hours, IP code, drop height and buoyancy. Sound scores lean on independent reviewers, chiefly Wirecutter, SoundGuys and Engadget, plus the recurring themes in owner reviews. Value compares the street price we found with the other four scores.
Each criterion is scored 0 to 100. The Index is the weighted sum, rounded to a whole number. For the JBL Charge 6: 88 × 0.30 + 95 × 0.20 + 95 × 0.20 + 85 × 0.15 + 82 × 0.15 = 89.45, which rounds to 89.
- Prices are US street prices from Best Buy or the brand store, checked 7 to 8 October 2026. Speaker prices move often.
- Owner ratings are from Amazon US listings on the date checked. Counts differ by color listing.
- Battery hours are the maker's figures at moderate volume. Loud playback and bass-boost modes cut them.
- No brand paid for placement or supplied review units for this report.

Considered, not scored in full
Bose SoundLink Max
A bigger, pricier class of speaker; we kept this report to speakers you can carry in one hand.
Ultimate Ears Boom 4
Strong durability, but the Charge 6 beats it on rated battery and adds a power bank for a similar street price.
Anker Soundcore Boom 2
Good value and loud, but larger than the speakers here and closer to a party speaker.
Anker Soundcore Motion 300
Strong on features for the price, but IPX7 only with no dust rating and a shorter rated battery than the Flip 7.
JBL Go 5
Very small and cheap, but battery and bass are well below the Flip 7.
Buying explained
What the IP rating means
The first digit is dust, the second is water. IP67 means dust-tight and safe at 1 m of water for 30 minutes. IP68 goes further; JBL tests the Flip 7 and Charge 6 at 1.5 m for 30 minutes.
IP ratings do not cover drops. Only JBL (1 m onto concrete) and Ultimate Ears (5 ft) publish a drop rating for the speakers here.
- IP68: JBL Charge 6, JBL Flip 7
- IP67: Marshall Emberton III, UE Wonderboom 4, Bose SoundLink Flex, Sonos Roam 2
- Floats: UE Wonderboom 4, Bose SoundLink Flex
Rated battery vs real battery
Makers rate battery at moderate volume. Loud playback, bass boost and cold weather all cut it. A useful rule is to expect 60 to 80 percent of the rated figure at party volume.
Battery boost modes extend runtime by trimming bass. JBL's Playtime Boost adds 4 hours to the Charge 6 and 2 to the Flip 7.
Bigger speaker, bigger sound
Size sets the bass. The 2.1 lb Charge 6 moves more air than the 0.9 lb Wonderboom 4, and no tuning closes that gap. Pick by where you will listen: a small speaker fills a bathroom or tent, a larger one a patio.
Pairing two speakers
Every speaker here can pair with a second unit, but mostly only with the same brand. JBL's Auracast works across recent JBL models. Bose pairs two Bose speakers in stereo or Party mode. Wonderboom 4 pairs only with another Wonderboom.
If you plan to build a set, stay with one brand.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth only
The Sonos Roam 2 is the only speaker here with Wi-Fi. That lets it join a multi-room system and keep playing when your phone leaves the room. If you have no other Sonos speakers, you pay for features you will not use.
