Methodology
How the Index score is built
- Drying speed 30%Published drying times and airflow readings from named reviewers, plus motor type and rated air speed.
- Heat control and hair care 25%Number of heat settings, temperature caps, scalp modes and any independent air-temperature readings.
- Weight and noise 15%Weight without the cord and published decibel readings, adjusted for balance where reviewers reported it.
- Attachments and features 15%What comes in the box, cord length, cool shot, memory and attachment recognition.
- Value 15%Street price against the other five, the guarantee length and the cost of extra attachments.
We did not test these dryers ourselves. We compared published specifications, read each maker's guarantee terms, pooled owner ratings from Amazon, Argos, Currys and brand shops, and used measurements published by named reviewers.
Each criterion is scored 0 to 100. The Index is the weighted sum: score × weight ÷ 100, added up across the five criteria and rounded. For the Dyson that is (88×30 + 96×25 + 82×15 + 96×15 + 55×15) ÷ 100 = 85.35, which rounds to 85.
Drying speed carries the most weight at 30%, because it is the main reason people upgrade. Heat control is next at 25%, because lower, steadier heat is what protects hair over years of use.
- Prices checked 9 to 10 October 2026 at the retailer named on each card.
- Where makers and retailers list different weights, we used the lower body-only figure and said so.
- Measured figures (air speed, decibels, power draw, drying times) come from Expert Reviews, Les Numériques, Mamabella, TechRadar and Good Housekeeping. Each is named where it is used.
- Wattage is not a speed score. Les Numériques measured the 1,600W Dyson Supersonic drawing 1,526W and the 2,200W ghd Helios drawing 2,105W, yet both dry quickly.

Best heat control and the fullest kit. Costs three and a half times the BaByliss.
Strengths
- Scalp protect mode holds air at the scalp near 55°C
- Five attachments recognised automatically, with settings remembered
- Good Housekeeping's lab found it ran cooler than any dryer it tested
- Pause detect drops heat and airflow when you put it down
Weaknesses
- £349.99, the highest price here
- Les Numériques and TechRadar found the ghd Speed faster at full power
- Only 66 Amazon reviews so far for this listing
The Nural is Dyson's Supersonic with sensors added. A distance sensor reads how close the dryer is to your head and turns the heat down near the scalp, aiming for 55°C. Heat settings are 100°C, 80°C, 60°C and a 28°C cool setting.
On speed it is strong but not the fastest. Mamabella dried mid-length hair from wet to styled in about ten minutes. TechRadar found the ghd Speed clearly more powerful on maximum. Good Housekeeping's lab, testing the standard Supersonic, recorded the best airflow and fastest drying of any dryer it had tried.
Heat control scores 96, the highest here. Good Housekeeping's lab found the Supersonic ran at lower temperatures than the average dryer. The Nural adds the scalp sensor on top. It also comes with five attachments, the most in this group, so the kit score is 96 too.
Value is the weak spot at 55. Dyson sells it for £349.99, down from a £399.99 launch price. The cheaper BaByliss Air Power Pro comes within two points on the Index.

Two points behind the Dyson for £250 less. Light, quiet and sold with a diffuser.
Strengths
- Les Numériques measured 22.6m/s airflow, top of its group at the time
- 75.6dB, one of the quietest in that same test
- About 400g, the lightest full-size dryer here
- 3-year guarantee, the longest here
Weaknesses
- Les Numériques found the pitch of the noise shrill despite the low reading
- Argos lists 0.82kg, which seems to include the cord and nozzles
- No memory or attachment recognition
The Air Power Pro uses a 1,700W digital motor. BaByliss quotes air speed of up to 228km/h. Les Numériques measured 22.6m/s at 20cm with no nozzle, the strongest in its comparison at the time. It measured air temperature at just 54.9°C without a nozzle, which helps the heat score.
It is light. Les Numériques weighed it at 401g and The Independent's reviewer at 380g, against 600g for her Dyson. One BaByliss shop reviewer weighed 767g, which likely included the cord. Argos lists 0.82kg. We used the body-only figure, as we do for every dryer here.
Noise measured 75.6dB in the same French test, among the lowest it had seen. The reviewer did note the sound was high-pitched. Drying times reported in UK reviews were close to the Dyson: The Independent's reviewer rough-dried and styled in about ten minutes, the same as with her Supersonic.
At £100 at Argos and John Lewis, against a £150 list price, with a diffuser and two nozzles included and a 3-year guarantee, it has the best value score of the top four.
Pick it if You want near-Dyson speed in a light dryer and do not need smart features.

Very fast and well proven, but heavier and plainer than the dryers above it.
Strengths
- Mamabella timed 1 minute 6 seconds to dry fine hair, a minute faster than its Supersonic
- 3m cord, the longest here
- 4.6 out of 5 from 770 Amazon reviews
- Brushless motor with a quiet acoustic design
Weaknesses
- 780g, the heaviest here
- Only one nozzle. The diffuser is £29 extra
- Les Numériques measured it drawing 2,105W, the most here
The Helios has been ghd's main dryer since 2020. It uses a 2,200W brushless motor and a contoured nozzle that ghd calls Aeroprecis. Air speed is quoted at 120km/h.
Speed is its strength. Mamabella's test dried fine, mid-length hair from wet in 1 minute 6 seconds, against 2 minutes 6 seconds for the Dyson Supersonic. Styling with the nozzle took 2 minutes 20 seconds. That earns a speed score of 90.
It is the heaviest dryer here at 780g, and it only has three heat settings with no scalp mode, so handling and heat score lower. Mamabella also found it left fine hair a little flat. It draws more power too: Les Numériques measured 2,105W against 1,526W for the Dyson Supersonic.
At £189 with a 2-year guarantee, value is good. But the BaByliss and Shark cost less and score higher overall.
Pick it if You want fast drying from a proven model and do not mind the weight.

The fastest dryer here, but loud, top-heavy and £110 more than the Helios.
Strengths
- Expert Reviews dried long, thick hair in about 4 minutes
- TechRadar found it more powerful than the Dyson Nural on maximum
- Cool outer airflow and cool-touch barrel
- Display, control lock and settings memory
Weaknesses
- 92dB at top speed in Expert Reviews' test
- 620g and top-heavy. The same reviewer reported arm ache
- Extra attachments cost £30 each
The Speed launched in February 2026 as ghd's fastest dryer. A 118,000rpm brushless motor drives air at up to 176km/h, according to ghd. A ring of cooler air surrounds the heated stream, which ghd says lowers hair surface temperature by up to 20°C against the Helios.
It scores 96 for speed. Expert Reviews rough-dried long, thick hair in about four minutes, and Mamabella called it the fastest dryer it had used, at about six minutes for mid-length hair. TechRadar found it hotter and more powerful than the Dyson Nural on maximum settings.
Handling is its weak point at 58. Expert Reviews weighed it at 620g and found it top-heavy, with arm ache during round-brush styling. It measured 92dB at full speed, loud enough to wake someone in the next room.
At £299 it costs £110 more than the Helios. It comes with one magnetic nozzle, and a diffuser, comb and wide nozzle are £30 each.

Four attachments and a 4-year guarantee for £66.66. Slower and bulkier than the rest.
Strengths
- Four attachments, including two diffusers for curls
- Thermacare sensor regulates air temperature
- 4-year guarantee if registered within 28 days
- £66.66 at Argos, a third off its £99.99 price
Weaknesses
- Conventional motor, quoted at 120km/h, slower than the brushless dryers
- Remington does not list a weight
- No independent drying-time measurements we could find
The Remington ONE is the budget pick. It uses a 2,000W motor with air speed quoted at 120km/h, and Remington claims 25% faster drying than its standard dryers. There is no brushless motor, and we found no independent speed tests, so it scores 70.
The box is the best equipped after the Dyson. It includes a slim concentrator, a flyaway tamer, a gentle drying diffuser and a curl-defining diffuser. A Thermacare sensor regulates the air temperature, and there are eight heat and speed combinations.
Remington gives a 3-year guarantee plus an extra year if you register within 28 days. At £66.66 at Argos, against £99.99 at Remington and Boots, it scores 92 for value, the best here.
Remington does not publish its weight on its UK page, so we scored handling at 60, below the light brushless models.
Pick it if You want a diffuser and a long guarantee on a budget and can accept slower drying.

Considered, not scored in full
Dyson Supersonic r
£449.99 and built for salon use. The Nural covers the same ground for home users at £349.99.
Shark FlexStyle
A dryer that twists into a multi-styler. It belongs in a hot-air styler comparison, not a dryer one.
Revlon One-Step Volumiser
A hot-air brush, not a dryer. It gives volume but cannot rough-dry quickly.
BaByliss Air Pro 2300
A cheaper AC-motor dryer at 728g. The Air Power Pro is lighter and faster for a little more.
Dyson Supersonic (original)
Still sold from £249.99 in some places, but the Nural adds the scalp sensor and attachment memory.
Buying explained
Why wattage does not predict speed
Drying speed depends on air speed and volume, not just heat. Brushless digital motors spin much faster and push more air with less power.
Les Numériques measured the 1,600W Dyson Supersonic drawing 1,526W and the 2,200W ghd Helios drawing 2,105W. Both dry quickly. The 1,700W BaByliss Air Power Pro produced the strongest airflow in that test.
Heat, scalp modes and hair damage
Hair is damaged by high heat held on it for too long. Lower, controlled temperatures with strong airflow are gentler. Good Housekeeping's lab found the Dyson Supersonic ran at lower temperatures than the average dryer.
Scalp modes now come on three of the six dryers here. The Dyson Nural aims for 55°C at the scalp. Shark's Scalp Shield lowers the air temperature and caps it at 110°C. The ghd Speed wraps the hot stream in cooler air.
- Use a heat protection spray before drying
- Rough-dry on medium heat, then use the nozzle on lower heat
- Finish with the cool shot to set the style
Weight and noise in daily use
A 300g difference adds up over ten minutes with your arm raised. The lightest dryers here weigh about 340g to 455g without the cord. The ghd Helios weighs 780g.
Noise is measured close to the dryer, so the numbers look high. Les Numériques recorded 75.6dB for the BaByliss and Expert Reviews recorded 92dB for the ghd Speed. Every 10dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
Attachments and what extras cost
Curly and coily hair needs a diffuser. The Dyson, BaByliss and Remington include one. The ghd and Shark dryers here do not, and a diffuser adds £29 to £30.
Check the box contents before comparing prices. The ghd Speed with a diffuser costs £329, close to the Dyson Nural with five attachments.
Running cost is small
A 2,000W dryer used for 10 minutes uses about 0.33kWh. At the October 2026 price cap of 26.32p per kWh, that is under 9p. Daily use for a year costs about £32 at most, and less on lower settings. Running cost should not drive the choice.
FAQ
What is the best hair dryer in the UK?
On our weighted scores, the Dyson Supersonic Nural at 85. For most people, the BaByliss Air Power Pro at 83 is the better buy at £100.
Is the Dyson Supersonic worth the money?
Only if you use the scalp mode and the attachments. It scores 96 for heat control and 96 for kit, but 55 for value. The BaByliss Air Power Pro comes within two Index points for £250 less.
Is the ghd Speed faster than the Dyson?
On maximum settings, yes. TechRadar found it hotter and more powerful than the Supersonic Nural. Expert Reviews dried long, thick hair in about four minutes. It is also louder and heavier.
What wattage hair dryer should I buy?
Do not choose by wattage alone. Brushless dryers at 1,600 to 1,750W, like the Dyson, Shark and BaByliss, dry as fast as older 2,200W models. Look at measured air speed and drying times instead.
Which hair dryer is best for curly hair?
One with a diffuser in the box. The Dyson Nural includes a two-mode Wave+Curl diffuser. The BaByliss Air Power Pro and Remington ONE also include one. The Remington has two.
Which is the lightest hair dryer here?
Shark lists the SpeedStyle Pro at 340g, but retailers list 750g. The BaByliss Air Power Pro has been independently weighed at about 380g to 401g, which makes it the lightest confirmed full-size dryer here.
How long should a hair dryer last?
Guarantees here run from 2 years (Dyson, ghd, Shark) to 4 years (Remington, if registered). Brushless motors tend to outlast older brushed motors. Clean the rear filter regularly, as a blocked filter makes any dryer run hotter.
How much does it cost to run a hair dryer?
Under 9p for a 10-minute dry at full power on a 2,000W dryer, at 26.32p per kWh. That is about £32 a year if used daily at full power.
